Classical Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1920’s and was originally called “Contrology,” or the art of control, the idea that one should have ultimate control over their body. As a frail child who suffered from a multitude of illnesses Pilates dedicated himself to self-healing. He drew from a variety of sources such as Eastern and Western practices as well as ancient forms of Greek and Roman exercise. As he developed his system the emphasis on mind-body connection was solidified in what is now the foundation of the classical approach: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Fluidity, and Breath. Clients seeking to get stronger quickly will do so in the classical approach by adhering to these 6 founding principles. Benefits include increased strength, flexibility, stamina, mental centering and focus.
